Who is our client ?
Our client was Unidel. A company that wanted to change the space of career counselling among students and professionals in India. Their focus primarily was on schools and colleges with their target demographic being people from ages 14-22.
What was troubling them ?
Their mobile app called 'Proteen' was barely doing well and had very few users coming back to use the app. Most of their app features were unused and they were unsure why. We were hired to understand the pain points of the app and their users so that they could have more user retention and achieve the impact they were trying for.
How did design help ?
Through appropriate user research techniques my team member and I were able to establish evidence based hypothesis for them to bring about changes in their business approach whilst also designing a more refined version of their app which would address all the usability issues.
To re-design we first needed to see the current version of app in action - hence we started with a usability test instead of starting with a fancy EDIPT or Double Diamond process
Usability tests with students from public schools to understand the different segments of potential users
Test carried out by : Jeet Sandhu, Raksha T (me)
Focus group discussions with private school students to understand their career selection needs
Interviewers : Jeet Sandhu, Raksha T (me)
We used the following stages to act as our guide during the Usability Test
Observations from the Usability Test
For 8th graders the information was too overwhelming and difficult to understand
There was confusion between CTAs and buttons like 'My profile' and 'Build my profile'
The user did not know what to do after the step 'Build my profile'
Most of the users did not find the 'hobbies' section useful or did not use it at all
Order of the items in burger menu was confusing and lacked hierarchy
There was no option to retake the 'psychometric test;
What CTAs and buttons were clickable and which weren't was very confusing
What CTAs and buttons were clickable and which weren't wasn't clear to a few users
Most users only scrolled through 'professions' page and did not click on any profession which goes to show either they didn't find that relevant or did not know it was clickable
No user used features like 'college finder' , certifications as these features were very hidden inside the app
Few users wasted. a lot of time on the dashboard figuring out what to do
We segregated the collected data into the following categories
We then took an online survey to understand the current user base demographics and other details
Identifying problems with the current user flow
We simplified the current user flow and broke it down into 6 main features as shown in the user scenario below
Team ideation and early wireframes
Unidel Office , Nariman Point, Mumbai 2020
I then worked on the final UI with all the features we narrowed down on for an improvised user centric solution
Onboarding guides the user to take the psychometric test and an option to view results or go to the app instead of directly taking them to the dashboard where they'd be confused as to what to do next
